Respiratory Drug Delivery 2006 - In Review
Respiratory Drug Delivery 2006 was held at the Boca Raton Resort and Club in
Florida , from April 23-27, 2006 and was the most successful international symposia to date organized by Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy. Participants from all over the world, representing academia, government, and the pharmaceutical industry were drawn by the meeting’s reputation for showcasing the latest advances in pulmonary and nasal drug delivery, debating regulatory and scientific issues as well as providing unsurpassed networking opportunities.
RDD 2006 attracted top-notch speakers who addressed all facets of drug delivery to the respiratory tract. Sessions included coverage of device design and patient preferences, lung defenses against infection, improved lung deposition and particle engineering, inhaled product risk assessment, emerging preclinical research tools and opportunities for nasal drug delivery. In 2006 our regulatory session centered on deciding appropriate ways to assess the quality of inhaled pharmaceutical products; and a distinguished panel of FDA, Health
and industrial experts took audience questions and debated the merits of different approaches that could be used to decrease the risk of batch failures.
Marking the 50th anniversary of the commercialization of the pressurized inhaler, a special session addressed the future of metered sprays. The organizers of the meetings and Virginia Commonwealth University were honored to recognize the contribution of Charlie Thiel to the development of the MDI - his modesty and unfailing generosity underpin his enormous creativity, vision and continued impact on our field. RDD 2006 marked the establishment of the “Charles G. Thiel Award” as a biennial event at our meetings in the USA.
Enormous interest in past poster sessions prompted us to introduce “Posters on the Podium” at RDD 2006. From the 150 poster abstracts we published, our reviewers selected five of the most interesting for short interactive presentation in the main auditorium. We also hosted more than 75 company displays in the Technology Exhibition.
The pre-prints of all podium sessions and posters were published by Davis Healthcare International Publishing and are also available electronically on RDD Online. A complete list of all of the Scientific Poster presentations can be found in RDD 2006 Proceedings. They cover a broad selection of topics related to pulmonary and nasal drug delivery, and each one has been peer reviewed.
